Once the property of the prestigious Counts of Auvergne (who were linked to the French Crown by marriage), it was definitively attached to the royal domain in 1211.
The village thrived from the 15th century onwards as it was located on a coal deposit known as Bassin de Brassac, a vast coalfield exploited until the early 20th century.
Today Auzon is a superbly well restored walled village that is worth a detour when visiting Auvergne in Central France.
