Henri Marie Joseph Grouès (1912-2007) is a Catholic priest famous in France and throughout the world under the name of Abbé Pierre.
Abbé Pierre devoted his entire life to helping poor, homeless and refugees through his foundation Emmaus that he founded in 1949.
The innovation of his foundation is that it rehabilitates people who are excluded from society or are simply poor by making them recover dignity and self esteem by working for those who are even poorer or in a greater need than they are.
His movement gained notoriety during the harsh winter of 1954 when he made an appeal on radio to call upon the French people's generosity to help the many homeless people who were sleeping on the streets of Paris.
Abbé Pierre died in 2007, but his foundation still runs and is present in 36 countries. The Companions of Emmaus collect all sorts of items and sell them at low prices, generating money that is used to assist those in need.
