Place Stanislas in Nancy

Place Stanislas, a royal square

In the early 1750s, the Duke of Lorraine and former king of Poland Stanisław Leszczyński commissioned the architect Héré with the creation of the Place Royale to showcase the grandeur and power of his duchy.

The square, since renamed Place Stanislas, is the flagship of the city of Nancy and was classified as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The lavish gates that access the square earned Nancy the name of Ville aux Portes d'Or - The Golden Gates City!
